Pet general wellness

General or preventative wellness in veterinary care refers to the proactive measures taken to maintain an animal’s overall health and prevent potential illnesses or health issues before they occur. This aspect of veterinary care involves regular check-ups, vaccinations, screenings, and implementing lifestyle practices that promote the well-being of pets.

Pet General Wellness

At Westside Animal Hospital, we cherish the opportunity we have to nourish and care for pets throughout a lifetime. We pamper our puppy and kitten patients, adore our adults, and celebrate seniors. And because we understand needs change with age, we tailor our treatment plans to meet your pets best where they are on their journey.

Annual wellness checkups are a crucial part of preventative care. Our nose-to-tail exams give us a good picture of your pet’s overall health and alert us to any changes that might have occurred since their last visit.

We recommend a physical exam at least once per year for adult pets and then every six months for senior pets. If you’ve recently adopted or purchased a pet, we advise you to book an appointment for their first examination within the first few weeks of ownership. Younger animals are very vulnerable to illness, and this will allow us to ensure they have the vaccinations they need, reassure you of their health, and give us a starting point for their medical records.

If it’s been a while since your pet’s last physical exam, give us a call at (207) 829-4090 today.

Routine Examinations

Regular visits to the veterinarian for comprehensive check-ups help in early detection of health issues or concerns. These exams often include assessing the pet’s weight, dental health, joint health, and overall physical condition.

Vaccinations

Administering vaccinations according to a recommended schedule helps protect pets from contagious and potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccinations are tailored to the specific needs and risks associated with each pet’s lifestyle.

Parasite Prevention

Regular preventive treatments for fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites are crucial in maintaining a pet’s health. These parasites can cause various illnesses and discomfort, making prevention essential.

Nutrition and Exercise

Providing a balanced diet and ensuring adequate exercise are fundamental for a pet’s overall health. Proper nutrition helps in maintaining a healthy weight and supports the immune system, while regular exercise helps in preventing obesity and promotes mental stimulation.

Dental Care

Regular dental check-ups and dental care routines are vital in preventing dental diseases that could affect an animal’s overall health. Dental issues can lead to infections and impact other organs in the body.

Behavioral Health

Addressing behavioral concerns and providing mental stimulation are crucial aspects of pet wellness. Enrichment activities, training, and addressing anxiety or stress contribute to a pet’s overall well-being.

Promoting general or preventative wellness in veterinary care involves not only treating existing health problems but also taking proactive steps to prevent potential issues. It focuses on maintaining a pet’s good health throughout their life, enhancing their quality of life, and extending their lifespan. Regular veterinary consultations and proactive care play an integral role in achieving these goals.
